Maan - respect : Sanmaan - self respect.
The whole shrimad bhagwatgita revolves around the concept of KARMA, and it teaches about respect. Bhagwatgita says " one should respect each and every life , material and emotion. Every material and immaterial system on this planet has to be respected evenly. The Good, The Bad, The Right, The Wrong, The Big, The Small and all the worldly deeds has to be respected. The solid, The liquid, The gas, The ether, The energy , The mass must be respected equally.
Respect is the core commodity which is followed by Hindus. Insects, birds, animals, human, reptiles, aquatics, scavengers, are never decided of respect.
One must understand the concept of respect , which is the first divine step towards divinity. Respect gives rise to love and love gives rise to respect, as if both god. Walks hand in hand.
To utter this respect to the fullest in Hinduism, there are vedic deities dedicated. Viz. Agni Dev - Fire God, Varun Dev - Rain God, Vayu Dev - air God, Pavan Dev - Wind God, Devraj Indra - The God of emotions and psych, Surya Dev - Sun God, Soma Dev - Moon God, Brihaspati - The almighty teacher of all the deities, Planet gods, Yaksha Yakshini - Nature God, Natraj - Dance God, Annapurna - The goddess of food, Saraswati Devi - Goddess of wisdom, Laxmi Devi - Goddess of wealth, Parvati Devi - Goddess of power, Dharti Mata - Mother Earth.
Hence in Hinduism, one has to respect whole material and immaterial world.
Psychologically one who follows this principle, stays happy for long. And one who attains this state to the fullest attains neutrality in life, and he/she tends to become Godly.
